Towards a Frictionless Digital Government

The public sector must accelerate its digital transformation and technology adoption to better serve citizens. Tracy Hackshaw, Chief Solution Architect and Lead of the Solution Architect Office for the Government of Trinidad & Tobago's National ICT Company (iGovTT), examines the path forward.
A frictionless digital government is one where citizens can access services seamlessly, without the bureaucratic barriers that have traditionally characterised public sector interactions. This requires not just the digitisation of existing processes, but a fundamental rethinking of how government services are designed and delivered.
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the urgency of this transformation, demonstrating both the necessity and the possibility of digital service delivery. Governments that had invested in digital infrastructure were better positioned to maintain service continuity during lockdowns, while those that lagged faced significant challenges.
For Trinidad and Tobago, the journey toward a frictionless digital government requires investment in infrastructure, capacity building, and a cultural shift within the public sector toward embracing technology as an enabler rather than a threat.
